In a shocking case of fraud, authorities in Spain have detained five individuals linked to a scam that deceived two women out of over $360,000 by impersonating Hollywood star Brad Pitt. The Spanish national police force, known as The Guardia Civil, has confirmed that an additional ten suspects are currently under scrutiny for their potential roles in this fraudulent scheme. They convinced one woman to transfer 175,000 euros (approximately $195,000) and another to part with 150,000 euros (around $167,000) under the pretense of supporting Pitt’s various projects.

The Emotional Manipulation

Through the messaging platform WhatsApp, the impersonators effectively manipulated the two women into believing they were investing in legitimate ventures related to the actor. The victims were misled to think they shared a romantic connection with Pitt, envisioning a future together. The emotional depth of their interactions made the deception all the more convincing.

To select their targets, the cybercriminals conducted thorough research on the women’s social media profiles, constructing psychological profiles that revealed their emotional vulnerabilities. According to a statement from The Guardia Civil, both women were suffering from depression and lacked affection, making them prime targets for the scam.

In a chilling aspect of the investigation, police shared a handwritten love letter purportedly from the scammers, expressing deep feelings of love and longing. The letter read, “My love for you is a real feeling that comes from my heart and forever. Please forgive me and accept me more than ever because I love you and this world is in love with you.”

Recovery and Ongoing Investigation

Law enforcement officials have made strides in recovering some of the stolen funds, managing to retrieve approximately 85,000 euros (about $95,000) of the total amount lost.
