If better battery life tops your wish list for your next iPhone, industry insider Ming-Chi Kuo’s latest report is promising. The iPhone 16 Pro Max, slated for release this year, could feature significant battery improvements.
New Battery Design Enhances Performance
Apple is preparing to introduce a redesigned battery for the iPhone 16 Pro Max. This new battery case, crafted from stainless steel, aims to boost both performance and durability. Ming-Chi Kuo, a well-known industry analyst, highlights that the use of stainless steel reduces the difficulty of removing the battery, aligning with the European Union’s future requirements for mobile phone batteries’ replaceability.
Kuo explains, “The use of a stainless steel battery case also reduces the difficulty of removing the battery, which will help Apple comply with the European Union’s requirements for mobile phone batteries’ replaceability in the future.”
An earlier report from November supports this claim, stating the iPhone 16 Pro Max battery would switch to a different metal shell. Initially, this change was focused on mitigating thermal issues that some iPhones experienced after the iOS 17 launch. However, the new design also promises extended battery life.
Sunway’s Role and Apple’s High Standards
The shift to stainless-steel battery cases is set to benefit Sunway, a major supplier for Apple. With Apple’s stringent production standards, Sunway’s gross margin is expected to rise as they meet the high demands.
Ming-Chi Kuo mentions in his latest Medium post, “My latest supply chain survey indicates the energy density (Wh/kg) of the battery cells of iPhone 16 Pro Max will increase.” This enhancement means longer battery life with the same size battery or maintaining current battery life with a smaller battery, providing Apple with the flexibility to innovate.

Apple faces three choices with this new battery technology. They could shrink the battery, freeing up space for other components, or maintain the battery size while extending its life. The third option, which seems likely given Apple’s trajectory, is to enhance battery capability to support new, power-intensive features without reducing battery life.
Addressing Overheating and Adding Features
To tackle potential overheating issues from higher energy density, Apple will adopt a stainless-steel battery case as a thermal solution. While stainless steel is less effective at dissipating heat compared to aluminum, it offers greater robustness and corrosion resistance. This change not only manages heat better but also protects the battery and overall iPhone system.
Looking ahead, if the feedback on this new battery system is positive, it could be adopted more broadly in future models. Kuo predicts, “This new battery design will be adopted in all 2H25 new iPhone models,” which suggests that all iPhone 17 models might feature this upgrade.
