G7 Backs Biden’s Peace Plan, Urges Hamas to Accept

Rome: The Group of Seven (G7) industrialized nations has voiced strong support for a Gaza peace proposal put forth by U.S. President Joe Biden. The G7 has called on Hamas to accept the terms of this plan, which Israel is prepared to implement.

In a unified statement released on Monday, the G7 leaders stated, “We, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), fully endorse” the peace plan “that would lead to an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, the release of all hostages, a significant and sustained increase in humanitarian assistance for distribution throughout Gaza, and an enduring end to the crisis, with Israel’s security interests and Gazan civilian safety assured.”

The G7’s endorsement underscores the urgency of the situation and the group’s collective desire to see an end to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The statement emphasized the need for Hamas to comply with the terms of the deal, urging nations with influence over Hamas to facilitate its acceptance.

Three-Phase Peace Proposal

President Biden’s plan, which he presented last Friday, is structured in three phases. This proposal is designed to cease hostilities, secure the release of hostages, and pave the way for the reconstruction of Gaza without Hamas maintaining power.

The initial phase calls for a six-week complete ceasefire. During this period, Israeli forces would withdraw from all populated areas of Gaza. This immediate cessation of violence aims to create a stable environment for further negotiations and humanitarian efforts.

Rebuilding Gaza and Ensuring Security

The plan’s subsequent phases focus on long-term solutions. Following the ceasefire, efforts would shift towards the extensive rebuilding of Gaza’s infrastructure and economy. International aid and resources would be mobilized to ensure the sustained delivery of humanitarian assistance throughout the region.

A critical aspect of the plan involves ensuring Israel’s security interests while simultaneously guaranteeing the safety of Gazan civilians. This dual objective aims to create a balanced and secure environment for both Israelis and Palestinians.

The G7, comprising the United States, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, has collectively called on Hamas to accept this proposal. The leaders emphasized the necessity of external pressure and support from countries that can influence Hamas’s decision-making.

Global Response and Diplomatic Efforts

The international community’s response to the G7’s endorsement has been largely positive, with many countries and organizations expressing their support for the peace initiative. Diplomatic efforts are intensifying as leaders seek to bring all parties to the negotiation table.

This endorsement by the G7 represents a significant step towards resolving the Gaza conflict. It highlights the global consensus on the need for immediate and sustained peace efforts in the region. The coming weeks will be crucial in determining whether Hamas will accept the proposed terms and whether a lasting peace can be achieved in Gaza.
