Escalating Conflict: Israel Bombs Gaza Amidst Growing Regional Tensions
GAZA STRIP (AFP) – Israel bombed the Gaza Strip on Friday, resulting in significant casualties, with at least 30 dead reported by a local hospital. The ongoing violence has raised fears of a broader regional conflict, especially with the increased tensions along the Israel-Lebanon border.
Israel’s military operations focused on areas north and south of the Central Gaza Strip Corridor. The Al-Ahli hospital in Gaza City reported receiving around 30 bodies, victims of the intensified Israeli bombardment. “It has been a difficult and brutal day in Gaza City,” said Dr. Fadel Naeem, the hospital’s director.
The violence in Gaza was mirrored by escalations on the Lebanon border. Late Thursday night, Israel intercepted a suspicious aerial target from Lebanon, followed by new Israeli strikes in southern Lebanon early Friday. This came after Hezbollah fired dozens of rockets at an Israeli barracks, retaliating for a deadly airstrike in south Lebanon.
Tensions with Lebanon
Hezbollah claimed multiple attacks on Israeli troops and positions on Friday, including drone strikes. The Israeli military confirmed operations to neutralize threats in southern Lebanon, escalating fears of a wider war. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned against the clashes turning Lebanon into “another Gaza.”
Experts are divided on the likelihood of a broader conflict, with Israel’s ongoing campaign against Hamas in Gaza and increasing hostilities with Hezbollah. Israeli military plans for a potential offensive in Lebanon were validated earlier this week.
Civilian Impact
The conflict’s human toll is severe. The violence on the Lebanon border followed the October 7 attack by Hamas militants from Gaza, resulting in over 1,194 deaths, mostly civilians. Israel’s retaliation has killed at least 37,431 people in Gaza, primarily civilians. Hostage negotiations remain stalled, though mediator Qatar continues efforts to bridge the gap between Israel and Hamas.

The war has devastated Gaza’s infrastructure, leaving residents in dire need of essentials. Richard Peeperkorn of the World Health Organization noted the limited impact of the promised daily “tactical pause of military activity” on aid delivery. Hisham Salem, a resident of Jabalia camp, described the market shortages and skyrocketing prices.
Israel’s Internal Struggles
The conflict has also strained Israel internally. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces criticism and protests, with accusations of prolonging the war. Despite these challenges, Netanyahu remains firm, insisting on the return of all hostages before leaving Gaza. His recent comments accusing the US of withholding military supplies have further complicated relations with Washington.
International Reactions
The war has intensified calls for a Palestinian state. Armenia recently recognized the State of Palestine, prompting a stern response from Israel. Meanwhile, the US continues to urge de-escalation, reflecting the complex international dynamics surrounding the conflict.
